I am happy to report that our Europe spreadsheet no longer has any red text in the area of flights and hotels (the red text were items that still needed be booked). After countless hours of research on Skytrax, Tripadvior, and several other websites, we have booked all 8 of our flights and all 8 of our hotels in 4 different countries. I'm really happy with the hotels we have chosen. We are staying in a lot of smaller boutique style hotels that are run by local families. We're hoping to be better introduced to the cultures of each country this way. I have read a plethora of reviews by other travelers who given the hosts at several of these establishments major props for their tips on what to see and how to get there. I can't wait to experience their personal touch 1st hand.
There has been some concern about our travel to Greece. I think it worked out that we had to cut Athens out of our trip due to time constraints. There have been some uprisings there due to economic uncertainty and while it has been deemed still safe for American travelers, I'd rather not press my luck. So while we will be in Athens for a couple hours on layovers, we will not be leaving the airport so should be safe and sound. Several experts have stated the islands are still 100% safe from the uprisings as their economies are based mainly on the tourism industry and they are therefore still welcoming guests. We look forward to visiting Crete's magnificent beaches and rich culture.
Aside from our trip to Europe, I now have another adventure I am looking forward to. This one will take place right here in Sweet Home Chicago. I will be participating in my first Olympic Distance Triathlon this August. I am very nervous about the length of the race and the fact that this will be my 1st open water swim. Now that I have taken care of a lot of the Europe planning I am going to put my focus on training. I have a little less than 6 months to prepare myself for a 1 mile open water swim, 25 mile bike, and 6 mile run.
